Key Personnel
Company-wide, we are licensed in over six states and actively involved in professional organizations including the Structural Engineers Association of California, UCB Multicultural Engineering Mentoring Program, Engineer's Alliance for the Arts, and American Society of Civil Engineers. Jack Laws, one of our founding principals, was Chairman of the State Existing Buildings Committee of the Structural Engineers Association of California from 1998 through 2001 and continues to be an involved member of the committee. The Existing Buildings Committee develops code criteria for seismic safety of existing buildings. Jack has also helped develop the 2003 International Existing Building Code and is currently a representative on the National Council of Structural Engineers Associations Existing Building Committee.

Raj Sahai
Principal
SDE's managing principal, Raj Sahai, founded the firm because of his passion for creative design — whether it be his own way of solving a complex problem or supporting the architect's vision. His recent work on Moscone West and its subsequent patented structural system exemplifies his vision of advancing the design industry with meaningful innovation. With more than 20 years’ experience in the Bay Area, he has contributed to hundreds of significant local projects. His recent focus has been on essential facilities (hospitals, emergency response centers, data centers, convention centers), residential projects, sports complexes, and cultural centers. Raj loves seeing projects that he has collaborated on be built and enjoyed by the community. Of particular interest is the San Rafael Ali Akbar College of Music, where his wife and accomplished traditional Indian Musician, Rita Sahai, performs.

John W. Laws (Jack)
Principal
Although he has designed and managed many major new building projects over the past 30 years, Jack has a special interest in historic preservation. This began nearly 20 years ago while working on the Wells Fargo Headquarters preservation project as a Senior Engineer at SOM. In 1984 he joined SDE to focus more on historic and other community related projects that have a direct impact in improving cultural and social conditions. Since then, he has been recognized for his expertise in the remodeling, renovation and seismic rehabilitation of numerous historically significant buildings, wood-framed residential projects, and community centers. His design philosophy is that the simplest approach is often the most elegant. When not working, Jack can be found bicycling, golfing and playing pick up basketball with his son.

Steven L. Lepisto
Principal
Steve is recognized for his ability to make a design work. Since earning his bachelors degree in Architectural Engineering, his interest has been to integrate structural engineering into the whole design process. He thrives on finding solutions that work not only for the structure but also for the architect and the other disciplines. Steve joined SDE in 1989 and is responsible for directing engineering staff on technical issues, using the integrated solution as a guiding force. Outside of work, Steve has been in involved in designing and overseeing construction of residential properties in San Francisco. When not working on projects, Steve likes to explore far away places and discover new wines.
